Christmas Reading

Advent: Christmas Reading

One of the ways we celebrate the Christmas Season is to countdown to Christmas Day through reading. A few days leading up to December 1st I wrap 24 Christmas books in some festive holiday paper and place them in a basket under the tree. We put up our tree the day after Thanksgiving so it’s all ready to go in December.

Each one of my sons take turns each day choosing a book that we unwrap and read aloud together as a family. (Dad can narrate better that I can, but my character voices are superb!) I really love this Christmas tradition! It keeps the Christmas spirit alive, brings us together as a family, and encourages reading. (What mom wouldn’t love this?) Please feel free to adopt this tradition and grab some books from the list!

10 things I DO NOT want for Christmas

A few days ago I received a free Holiday Planning Workbook from Living Well, Spending Less by Ruth Soukup. As a part of the workbook, there is a goal worksheet (which I love) that asked "what are some things that I  DON'T" want to do this year.

I just adored how she channeled me not only to think about what I wanted but included what I didn't as well. I was already preparing some holiday fun and memories for my family that were more meaningful and purposeful but her workbook gave me the opportunity to get it all out.

So I began a list of things I DO NOT want.

Here it is...

1. I DO NOT want holiday to pass us by without any real preparations and plans.
(Make plans, on purpose plans!)

2. I DO NOT want my sons to have the wrong idea of Christmas.
(Continue to teach them about the Christmas Story; how it's center of our faith.)

3. I DO NOT want my family to be bored.
(Plan fun activities, crafts, and outings for the family--stay tuned, I'm sharing.)

4. I DO NOT want my sons just to have more stuff.
(Implement a meaningful gift plan--already have it planned, stay tuned in Dec.)

5. I DO NOT want my family to take this season for granted.
(We will feed the homeless.)

6.   I DO NOT want to spend the entire holiday in the kitchen.
(Chose simpler recipes, assign boys cooking tasks, and get started early.)

7. I DO NOT want to forget the countdown til Christmas.
(Make a countdown til Christmas Calendar-- stay tuned for pictures!)

8. I DO NOT want my boys to miss the opportunity to give
(Have boys choose toys they can give up to donate.)

9. I DO NOT want to miss Operation Christmas Child this year.
(Order OCC supplies and pack our box!)

10. I DO NOT want to miss the Hawks' games this year!
(Order tickets early!)

What do you NOT WANT to do this Holiday Season?

ABCs of the Trinity

!!!FREEBIE FRIDAY!!!

Thank you for joining me, on what I hope is a Freeing Friday! We love Fridays at Men-In-Training! Mainly because we only school half a day.

Today, I thought I'd share the ABCs of the Trinity. As we enter into the Christmas Season, I always find myself explaining the Trinity and the Names of Jesus to my sons. I created this resource last year to assist me and I figured there may be other moms who could use a free guide as well. Enjoy!

Spell Out Loud has a cute Trinity Snowman poem (w/ coloring sheet) if you're looking to tie it in with the Winter/Christmas theme.

Operation Christmas Child

We are so excited here in the Men-In-Training Household! We received our Operation Christmas Child package last night right in the nick of time. I had planned for us to do our OCC shopping today and pack our boxes tomorrow so its arrival could not be more perfect.

As a part of the Christmas season, I do my best to teach my sons about service and charity. I feel that it is important to learn how to serve others (with the correct attitude) and offer a hand to those in need.

OCC is a perfect way to add a tangible lesson of service and charity at the end of all my teachings and unit studies on the topic.

How?
You can order a pack and build together with a group or your family. Alternatively, you can search for ministries and organizations that support OCC and need helpers/packers. (Click here for packing information from Samaritan’s Purse.)

Choosing the Gift: Gender & Age
I love that OCC encourages packing parties but I have not (as of yet) been able to get anyone to commit to doing with us; so we do it together as a family. Since it’s a family affair, we normally begin by deciding the gender and age of a child we would like to bless. Since my husband is typically working, we complete a box together as a couple. So each child has their own box and my husband and I share.

Thinking & Planning
Next, I allow the boys to brainstorm what they think the child may want. (The kit comes with suggestions and ideas but I like the boys to add a personal touch and think about whom they may be blessing.) I usually have my oldest son write out what we want to include in our boxes. This creates our shopping list.

Shopping
The boys and I will visit Dollar Tree & Target for our shopping. They get a kick out of checking the list and placing the items in the cart. I do my best not to purchase anything else in this time; making the trip special and all about OCC. I will share the budget with my oldest son so he can keep up with some of the math as we shop. (He is really good with numbers.) This is a fun experience for us all and they feel all “adult” being able to shop and plan. (I only supervise.)

Sorting &Packing
Once we get home, they sort out all the items and begin to pack their boxes. You can pick up free boxes from Family Christian Bookstore or order through Samaritan’s Purse. Alternatively, you can just pack plastic shoe boxes. Since they are just $1 in the Dollar Tree, we opt for plastic boxes.

We normally discuss how the child will feel once they open up their boxes. Some of the dialogue here is, “I hope my box goes to Africa!” or “I hope a cool boy gets this one, a kid just like me!” And on and on they go in their excitement to help others. (As you can imagine, I enjoy listening in.) OCC asks for a $7 donation for shipping and delivery costs. One of the awesome features we love is the ability to track the package and see where it was delivered. (We will be using this feature for the first time this year.) So, I will actually be able to inform my sons if it made it to Africa or not. (wink, wink!) “Follow your box” is only available if you donate online.

Prayer
We pray for the children that will receive our boxes in advance. We desire for their Christmas Season to be a bit more special and memorable with their box. We also cover the workers and founders of OCC for making it possible for us to give in this way.

Dropping Off
There are several drop-off locations but we like to drop off at Family Christian Bookstore. We normally go in to browse and pick up something simple for the family. The drop off date ends on Monday, October 25; but you can ship your box:

When You Give, You Receive Too!

Giving is such a blessed act. My family is afforded the opportunity to be a bit less selfish and concentrate on the needs of others. It is also a time of gratitude. We add various hygiene products in our boxes and even though we are not "well-off" it makes you stop and think; these kids don’t even have toothpaste and toothbrush. This continues to be a major-eye opener for my sons. In a society so driven by more and more…and more stuff, I am glad that giving (especially in this season) helps up to not be consumed by just more stuff.

T.H.I.N.K.

!!!FREEBIE FRIDAY!!!

Okay, if you have children older than 5 you have probably asked yourself (of your child)..."can you please think before you speak?"

My 7-year old son rubs me the wrong way daily with what he allows himself to say (and especially to his own younger brother!)

A part of this is self-control. We have spoke about this. You know, the fact that not every thought you have needs to be shared or expressed. We have also discussed that he needs to be more in control of his "members" (his mouth being one of them) and not speak carelessly and loosely, especially when it can hurt others. We also read the Bible and he learned exactly what God had to say about loose lips. While I saw improvements, I knew some of his loose words were not 100% due to his lack of self-control but a failure on my part to give him something (a tool, resources, method, etc) that he could use to help guard him against undesired behavior.

And then one day...

I was scrolling on Facebook and found the T.H.I.N.K. acronym that sang the hallelujah chorus.
Ok, not literally but I was so excited I could have sworn I actually heard it.

I could not find a free printable anywhere! So, I made one myself and I explained it to my son.
He keeps the printable in his "Character" section of his Spiritual Growth Notebook.

I can actually see him running down the list mentally in his head before he speaks. Many of times, he walks away and says "Nevermind, I just realized I shouldn't say that!" (Unfortunately, I have to report that it does not happen ALL the time. **wink wink**)

Please download your freebie and explain to your child if you like. And if you are like me, go ahead and print one for yourself to to hang on the frig and place in your prayer journal/binder as an awesome reminder.

Writing & Grammar Review: BJUP

Bob Jones University Press (BJUP) Writing & Grammar 2 Review
When I decided to take on the task of homeschooling my sons, my oldest was in first grade. Once he was home, I realized he retained grammar and he had wonderful ideas in conversation but when I asked him to write them on paper…he couldn’t. Mainly, because he had been taught to write through prompts and he could not “run with an idea” if there was not a prompt to guide him. I have no issue with prompts, per se, but I do believe a child should be able, should be taught rather to transition the thoughts and ideas from his head to paper without a melting down, freaking out, or giving up.
In my search for curriculum to assist us, I found many things that would be great for him if only he was a third grader or a six grader. The point here is, I could not find anything that worked on the process and mechanics of writing for someone his age. Then, I stumbled across BJU Press’ Writing & Grammar workbook.  It gave me exactly what I was looking for at the time.

What is it all about?
BJU Press offers an inviting approach (that I especially think caters to younger children/writers) of alternating grammar and writing chapters to encourage the child to utilize his grammar skills in his writing in a real-life way. The work text pages are colorful with organized content on each page for visual stimulation and lots of color with kid-friendly pictures.
Each lesson helps to build the child’s accuracy and fluidity building their confidence in writing. The program also reveals biblical knowledge and truths in each lesson with scripture and subtle application. This specific design is available in grades 2-6 of BJU Press’s Writing & Grammar curricula.
Grammar Chapters
Each chapter focuses on a theme, such as, travel, sports, or animals. Practice sentences and teaching methods are consistent with the theme allowing the child to grasp it smoothly and learn new vocabulary. The parent has the opportunity to discuss the theme and all other included components. I took the time to review all the grammar chapters prior to beginning so I could better prepare myself for each theme to teach a fun and engaging lesson. In the “writing handbook” portion of the text, there are several grammar songs and guides to assist you in teaching writing in a more enjoyable way.
Writing Chapters
Each chapter included a specific type of writing while walking the child through the five steps of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing. In the publishing stage, BJU Press has themed, lined paper for your child to write his final version on. My son loves how “cool” the paper is and he looks forward to hanging it on the refrigerator and later in his writing notebook where we keep a collection of his final copies. In the “writing handbook” section there are also graphic organizers to assist the child in breaking down their writing into smaller steps. I used this as an opportunity for me to model how to write for him. I would complete the organizer as if I were the student ahead of time. Then, I would show him how I did it and we would discuss it. He enjoyed seeing my writing before he began on his.

Why we use BJU Press Writing & Grammar
·         Improvement: My son’s writing is really improving! Not only is his writing better his attitude towards writing is also.
·         Practice: We love the separation of “guided practice” vs. “independent practice.” In each lesson, the first page is guided practice where we walk through it together discussing the answers and why it’s the best choice. Then, we flip the page over for independent practice in which I tell him he has to at least attempt the first section on his own. I check it and then I “okay” him to move on to the next section.
·         Application: I like that in each independent practice section BJU Press offers him a chance to use the skill in his writing for 1 or 2 simple sentences.
·         Review: At the end of each chapter, there is a chapter review and a cumulative review. The chapter review reflects back over all things learned and discussed in that specific chapter and the cumulative review reflects back over all things taught from that chapter including all previous chapters as well.
·         Self-correction: I like seeing my son self-correcting his own writing as he reads it aloud during the revising and proofreading stages.
·         Teacher’s CD: We enjoy some of the neat writing and grammar puzzles and games that are included on the CD. I especially like the review and extended learning exercises as well. Sometimes when we are on school break, I will print of a few puzzles or games for us to have fun with so he is not “sitting” on his learning and loosing it.

This is our second year using BJU Press’ Writing & Grammar texts and we are major fans. I could not find another writing curriculum provider that offered alternating grammar and writing for young, inexperienced writers. I was leaping for joy when he could write a solid book report, a poem and a make-believe story (to name a few) with fluidity and an understanding of what parts of the writing are included and how apply it. As a former teacher of writing and composition, BJU Press gets a seal of approval from me!

Daily Prayer for Wife & Mom

!!!FRIDAY FREEBIE!!!

Here is a simple, yet powerful prayer I created to cover myself daily in my many roles to serve my family and others...with a good attitude...a joyful heart...you know, like Jesus would if He were to switch places with me.

After all this is my ultimate (and ever-reaching goal)...for me (my words, actions, thoughts, and attitude) to look like Jesus if he had to do what I was doing.

When I ask myself..."If Jesus was a wife/mom/homemaker, what would he do, and how would he do it?" I think on some of the things listed in this prayer, so I offer it back up to Him knowing He will help me as I accomplish it.

I printed a copy and added it to my Prayer Journal! (I may also hang 1 on frig so I can cover myself more than once a day!) :-)

You can click here HERE to download a free copy of this prayer! (mentions "sons" instead of "children" if you have boys only)
